‘I’ll sponsor those workers’

INDIA--It was my last full day in Kalakata in the northernmost reaches of India. Beverly Thompson, Pastor Sahay Topno and I were holding an evangelistic meeting in a colorful three-sided tent. Earlier that day we had broken ground for a new church. Just prior to breaking ground, Mrs. Thompson introduced me to Pema Khandu, who had just arrived from Bhutan--about 30 miles north. As I heard Pema’s story, I was humbled to learn what he had suffered for the Lord in the year since being baptized. … [Read more...]

Evangelical church teacher becomes Seventh-day Adventist

TBOLI, South Cotabato, Philippines--I am Inah Tan. I was an active teacher in an evangelical church. I taught literacy. I devoted my time to serving others and sharing with them God’s goodness. I thought that what I believed was true. I also believed that the church I was attending was the real one that served God. Then I started to have many questions about my belief. I met Gospel Outreach worker Sammy Tambunan. He studied with me. I was inspired by his Bible-based answers. Church … [Read more...]

Letter from Nepal

Greetings from Nepal. On May 22, Dr. M. C. John, vice president for the Southern Asia Division and chairman for Nepal, officially inaugurated the radio church concept that the Pokhara church had launched. The idea behind this is for faster plantation of churches in the villages and valleys of Nepal. Now our church activities go live to many FM stations at once. We can reach at least half the population of Nepal. The Lord has opened another door to meet the needs of our dear listeners. They … [Read more...]

Nepali mountain villages respond

I am glad to share good news from the Udaipur District. Udaipur is in the northeastern part of Nepal, about 90 miles by air from Kathmandu, the capital city. However, to reach a Seventh-day Adventist church in this area, you have to travel almost 24 hours by bus from Kathmandu and then hike for eight hours over a rugged mountain trail. On May 17, I headed for Udaipur. Assisted by Pastor Kumar Adhikari, I instructed the baptismal candidates prepared by Gospel Outreach workers Hyendra Rail and … [Read more...]

The white chicken ritual

Wendy is one of our students at Malinawon Mission School. She also is the daughter of our village chief and an active member in the church. During midweek prayer meetings she would stand and ask to pray for her backslidden father to come back to church. One day Wendy became sick. She was so ill she could hardly get up. The nearest hospital was a long river trek and a day hike away. She might die on the trail. So her father, the chief, said, “Get me a white chicken so that I can start my … [Read more...]

Angel in the dark

Sixteen-year-old Engelyn is one of my deaf students. Because the homes of my students are far from the village school they stay with me. I am a mother to them. We become very close as we do household chores, wash clothes and review their lessons using sign language. Engelyn can hardly cope with the lessons. One time during our writing class I noticed that she was not writing. Her pencil was broken in two, and her paper was torn to pieces. There were times when she would dash out and cry … [Read more...]

Encounter in the forest

I was thirsty and tired. My teammate, possibly even more exhausted, was way behind. And we had 20 more miles to hike to our mission school. In front of me was a river to cross, so I lowered my pack onto a log and sat to wait for my companion. “Thank You, Lord!” The cool shade of the woods and the gentle breeze gave relief. Communist rebel soldiers roam the forests in this area, so I continued my prayer. “Lord,” I whispered, “please be with us and help us shine your love to anyone … [Read more...]

Gospel spreading in Bhutan

Nearly a decade ago, Gospel Outreach leaders began dreaming of entering Bhutan, a country with a state Buddhist religion. The state religion is carefully guarded by neighborhood policing--anyone can report proselytizing to authorities. As a first step of faith, Gospel Outreach helped fund Indian workers who could cross the border on a daily basis. However, government restrictions gradually made it less and less conducive to working both sides of the border. During this time, a … [Read more...]

A child will lead them

More than 100 years ago little Hattie May Wiatt lived near Grace Baptist Church in Philadelphia. The church was small. As Pastor Conwell arrived one Sunday he noticed a group of children outside. They couldn’t get in because their division already was full. Hattie was standing by the gate and looked like she might be ready to turn around and head home, so the pastor scooped her up and carried her into the children’s room. The next day, he again saw Hattie as he passed her house on the way … [Read more...]
